| In a docu-drama format, it examines three notable characters from the old west of the U.S: General Custer, Billy 'the Kid' and Wyatt Earp. And basically explores whether the legend of each man measures up to historical fact. Toby Stephens excels at playing haughty characters and he does it here with ghusto. More than that, he depicts a man who brazenly charged forward for glory and one who it seems didn't pay heed to his subordinate officers. At the same time, he wasn't a stupid man and his plan nearly succeeded. If his officers had followed suit and perhaps if he hadn't dismounted so early, his plan may have worked. the story with Billy the Kid is a little less interesting. It primarily deals with whether he should've been pardoned by the governor of New Mexico for the killing of a corrupt sheriff. Despite killing two other deputies subsequently in cold blood. There's a group of 'experts' who discuss the case but it feels a little incidental. The whole exercise with pardoning him seems a little pointless since it was such a long time ago. There's no-one alive from the time to say otherwise is there. The final segment is quite interesting because it examines whether Wyatt Earp & Co killed the Clanton and the McLaurys. It shows Earp to be shrewd in how he decided to exploit an Arizona law to give his testimony without being questioned. It also deals with how Earp pursued his brother's killer(s) afterwards without mercy. And interestingly reveals that the dispute between Wyatt Earp and Ike Clanton was to do with money.
