Don Alejandro, om de vază în teritpriu, îi spune într-o scrisoare fiului său, aflat la studii în Spania, că sunt mari probleme aasă nespecificând despre ce este vorba. Fiul abandonează studiile şi se întoace acasă unde constată că militarul comandant al garnizoanei locale este corupt şi se poartă ca un despot comiţând tot felul de fărădelegi.
